Distinguishing Features

Two Major Curriculum Focuses

(1)Computer Network Technology and Application:

The objective of this curriculum is to nurture computer networking professionals with practical application capabilities for the needs of the local industries.

(2)Embedded Systems Technology and Applications:

The objective of this curriculum is to nurture embedded systems professionals with design concept, academic knowledge and proficient skills such that they are well prepared before entering the job markets in this field.

Teaching Plans

In order to meet the local industry needs, the CSIE department plans two core curriculums, namely, “Computer Network Technology and Applications” and “Embedded Systems Technology and Applications”.
In the first curriculum, we will inject the practical training courses developed by Cisco and Microsoft based on their accumulated networking industry experiences plus tutoring the students to obtain CCNA/CCNP certificates and MCSE certificates. In the second curriculum, we’ll educate students in applying embedded systems to industrial product development and applications, such as hand-held devices, PDA, Information Appliances (IAs). Here, we emphasize especially in practical applications design capabilities for system level integration with twofold objectives: (1) To reduce the gaps between the graduates trained by the technical colleges and the needs of the skillful people by Information Industries; and (2) To supplement the current brain shortage in the Information Industry.

The middle and long range plans of the CSIE department accommodate these two mainstreams to continuously expand the faculties in “Embedded Systems Technology and Applications” and “Computer Network Technology and Applications” related curriculum, laboratories, and equipments, and also plan to set up cross-department curriculums which are closely related to these two mainstreams, such as “Multi-media and Network Communications Technology Applications” and “Intelligent Life Technology and Applications” curriculums to strengthen the teaching results. Furthermore, in order to strengthen the collaboration between the university and the industry, we also formed “Intelligent Life Technology Research Center”.

Teaching Plan Focuses

(1)Incorporate courses into two core curriculums

In order to promote the students’ hands-on capability, the first goal in “Embedded Systems Technology and Applications” is to teach students understand the working principles of ARM embedded microprocessors. Then, to teach them how to develop applications and driver programs on the ARM embedded system development platforms. We also put special emphasis on the Linux operating system practical course for building up the students’ knowledge in the operation principles and methods of the Linux operating system. Then, to teach them how to implement programs on the ARM embedded system development platforms.

In the “Computer Network Technology and Applications” curriculum course plan, we specifically design the practical courses such as CCNA Examination and Certification (based on Cisco global network society course), Web Design, …, etc, to build up the student’s essential skills for the market needs.

(2)Course plans parallel to curriculum plans

The CSIE department course plans have two core curriculums, namely, “Computer Network Technology and Applications” and “Embedded Systems Technology and Applications”, which are practical enough to take care of both the local industry needs as well as the students’ future employment consideration. Since 2003, our course plans have also accommodated the course plans recommended by the Labor Department, which promotes better employment opportunities for our graduates. The details of such course plan are listed chronologically as follows:

(3)Tutoring for Students’ Professional CertificateExaminations

CSIE department emphasis on the built-up of professional practical skills and actively encourage and tutor the students to obtain the following professional certificates in order to increase their competitiveness in the job markets: MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer), CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associates), RHCE (Red Hat Certified Engineer), Linux LPI (Linux Professional Institute), etc international certificates. The students can choose to take exams at different levels according to their learning conditions and career plans. In order to promote the students’ willingness to take the professional certificate exams, CSIE department generally subsidizes the registration fees for those who pass the profession certificate exams. Additionally, we offer a one-year professional certificate tutoring course in the Senior-year in order to help the students pass those professional certificate exams. There is also a strict department-wide regulation that any student fails to pass either the professional certificate exams or the professional exams required by the CSIE department, then he/she will not be allowed to graduate.
