Development of Embedded System Technology and Applications

Recently, there are a lot of improvements in the computer processing performances and prices, which result in the pervasion of computer users and the increasing demands of software functions, due to the continuing innovation and development of the semiconductor, photoelectric, and nanometer technologies. The operating systems originally used in PCs have evolved to full- fledged network operating systems or compact embedded operating systems. Currently, many developed countries such as US, Euro and Japan, the developing BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries and Taiwanese Information Industries all adopt open source software Linux as the optimal choice for system development. These open platforms equipped with complete functionalities and various totally free system software have attracted many global users from the original “wait-and-see” attitudes to “trial use” or “full deployment” of Linux. This substantial increase of Linux users should promote the tremendous demands on Linux talents. Furthermore, the development of new generation software programming languages (e.g., Java, .NET, VB) and object oriented design concept and techniques realize the reusability of software, user-friendly interfaces and cross-platform development environment. These developments not only significantly reduce the software development schedule and ensure software reliability but also facilitate the easy adoption of the developed software into the personal mobile communication devices such as hand-phone, PDA, etc.

Development of Computer Network Technology and Applications

Domestically due to the liberation of telecommunication regulations and the implementation of the 6-years old national infrastructure construction plan, the telecommunication networks expedite their paths of going “fiber-optics”, “intelligent” and “mobile”, which causes the information-communication revolution and promotes the advancement of the info-communication network technologies as well as the rise of the new applications, such as Internet phones, video-conferencing, video-on-demand, remote healthcares, remote learning, digital content, e-banking, e-commerce, on-line shopping, etc. Consequently, technologies such as, network planning, network performance, network security and management, Internet database, …, etc have become important research topics. Furthermore, in order to accommodate the production of mass amount of data, how to search the needed data from the network databases and how to mine data from database, then to analyze the mass amount of data to gain useful information and provide analysis and decision support become a big challenge for the development of data mining tools.

Nurturing Objectives

Based on the above analysis, the first priority of CSIE development is on “Embedded Systems Technology and Application”, while the second development priority is on “Computer Network Technology and Application”. Furthermore, due to the anticipated shortage of system integration talents among the information technology professionals, the CSIE department will focus its goals on the training and education of the middle and upper levels of system integration talents on both “Embedded Systems” and “Computer Networks” domains.
